CAPACITY BUILDING

Supporting the capacity of relief and development agencies is at the heart of what we do. For-profit consultancies often work to build dependencies, which push up their profits. Our focus is on building the capacity of organisations to the point that they do not require further assistance.

Our coaching and mentoring, as well as Safer Access training materials, are built around sharing our knowledge of evolving best practice. The fluid nature of organisational and field operating structures, and continually changing operating contexts, requires that we are constantly researching and developing innovative approaches and practices. We avoid applying the typical training template by conducting an in-depth analysis of needs relevant to our partners.

Our principles require that we advocate for greater access for all, starting within the training environment itself.  We are strongly supportive of measures that build national staff capacity, as they are often most at risk and are the backbone of programme continuity. We also take a beneficiary-focused approach to training, which is reflected in all aspects of our work.  Appreciation of the nuances of local cultural and traditional norms and language barriers are built into the manner in which we engage with both national and international staff. Quite apart from telling you what you already know, we produce learning environments where both national and international staff can comfortably engage, share their experiences, and enhance their skills and knowledge. This allows for a rich learning process for all participants and better enables the dissemination of new skills to the organisation.

Where direct support is not possible, we provide dedicated remote support by our team of Advisors, supported by the Safer Access Network of Expertise.  A Safer Access remote support case study can be found here
