OUR WORK

Safer Access works in four main focus areas to achieve our aim of strengthening the aid sectors ability to reach those in need. In everything that we do, we strive to ensure that we remain field relevant, non-prescriptive and enabling, so as to ensure that we are providing the best possible support to the agencies with which we work.

Field programmes, either prior to commencing or after years of work, sometimes need help. Serious incidents occur, risk environments change, or staff are without the capacity to adequately manage risk while still accessing those in need. In all of these cases, Safer Access can provide direct support to programmes to ensure their continuity, and the safety of staff and beneficiaries alike.

Beginning with a process of thorough review of the operating environment and organisational capacities, we help our partners build upon and improve their existing capacity to manage risk.    Our Advisors problem-solve, mentor, encourage and assist managers and staff to think safer, while providing a wider range of options and tools to enable more sustainable access to beneficiaries.

At the same time, we strive to institutionalise better practices to ensure that staff can take more responsibility for their safety, and that managers have effective and reliable procedures in place to help them address even the most complex situations.  To that end, we encourage an organisation-wide, shared responsibility for safer, more secure programming. We believe that the concepts touched upon here will enable more access to people, whatever their needs.

Throughout our work, we also prioritize mentoring and empowering national staff to better access their communities.  This is a key element of ensuring sustainable access and achieving the greatest impact over the long term.
